Raith Rovers could face disciplinary action over social media cock-up

Raith Rovers’ Facebook feed administrators have cocked up again after putting out a controversial post questioning the proportions of opposition manager Neil Lennon’s private parts following their goalless derby draw hosting Dunfermline Athletic last Friday.

The former Northern Ireland midfielder was taunted by home fans as he walked off the pitch at Kirkcaldy’s Stark’s Park after the final whistle and responded by gesticulating in their direction with his right thumb and index finger, a hand signal interpreted by some as suggesting that he considers the hosts to be a smaller club than their visitors by some measure.

The 55-year-old’s gesture was captured on camera and one of the photographs taken was posted on social media by Raith afterwards captioned ‘how big is your penis, Neil?’

Acknowledging their cock-up, Raith took down that phallocentric taunt within an hour but it had already been viewed thousands of times by then and shared and commented upon, dividing opinion even among home supporters, with some considering it amusing but others denouncing it as ill judged and embarrassing.

Though deleted after being online for around three-quarters of an hour, that might not be the end of the matter as Friday night’s post could put Raith at risk of potential disciplinary action if it is considerered to have breached Scottish Football Association judicial panel protocols by bringing the game into disrepute.

That post wasn’t Raith’s first Facebook foray into genitalia-orientated humour either as it was preceded by another in May 2023 announcing a new contract for then defender Liam Dick headlined ‘Dick extension’, racking up millions of views at the time but also coming in for criticism for its ribaldry.
