Time could be called on famous former Hawick bar as conversion plans are revealed
Time could soon be called for the final time on a famous Scottish Borders bar and restaurant.
The Gretel at 13 Teviot Crescent in Hawick has gone through various name-changes over the decades.

The venue operated as The Gretel bar for many years, serving as a popular local landmark and gathering spot that townsfolk remembered fondly for its good times.
After closing down as The Gretel, the venue has been renamed and rebranded over the years.
It operated for a time as 13 Brew and subsequently The Oak Lounge around late 2019. However, locals continued to refer to it by its original name.
In a post-Covid environment of 2021, Ashley Barry reopened the establishment using its original name again, investing £40,000 in its refurbishment as a city bar-style venue. Sadly, rising operating costs again forced the closure of the premises in 2023.
It reopened again in 2024 under new management but closed a year later when the building was unexpectedly put up for auction.
Now an application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council for its change of use to form a holiday let on the ground floor and residential flat on upper floors.
