The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) recently hosted a roundtable in Westminster on support for small and medium-sized abattoirs, bringing together cross-party MPs to discuss the challenges facing the industry and the alarming number of closures seen across the country.

The total number of UK abattoirs fell below 200 in 2024, with closures often due to the rising cost of official controls, energy and waste disposal bills and increasing red tape, according to the NFU.

John Lamont, MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, believes abattoirs are “vital for our farmers, butchers and rural economy”.

He has called on UK and Scottish Governments to work together across the border to support these businesses.

Mr Lamont said: “Their closure can mean longer journeys for livestock and fewer options for farmers to get their produce to market.

“Reduced competition and higher costs can make it even harder for farms to stay in business and can push up food prices.

“I’ve signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister urging him to protect our network of local abattoirs, cut unnecessary red tape, review charges and support investment, while maintaining high animal welfare standards.”
