The 30-year-old came out on top in his class at this year’s Scotland’s Strongest Man championships, held at Arena Strength and Fitness Gym in Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and sponsorderd by Inverness sportswear store Cerberus Strength.

That’s his first national title, though he was named UK novice strongman champion at a contest in Spennymoor in County Durham in 2017, but he’s not resting on his laurels and is now planning to vie for the title of world’s strongest man in the US in November next year.

He’s also been named as the Borders’ strongest man twice, in 2017 and 2018.

Jason, of Croft Road in Kelso, was one of 10 contenders in the Peterhead contest’s under-105kg class, one of two categories on the day, the other being under-90kg.

He beat Eben Van Wyk and Darren Robb to take top place after five events – a dead-lift, running with sandbags, shoulder press, walking with a 130kg weight in each hand and holding a 20kg weight out in front of him.

Jason, a builder by trade working for the family firm, Kelso’s HE Builders, was delighted to emerge on top, saying: “It was great to win it. It’s been my goal since I started doing strongman three years ago.

“I was pretty confident before I went up to compete, but it was really good to actually do it.”

There being no gain without pain, according to the old saying, Jason, husband to Joanna and dad to Charlie, two, said he had been beset by aches and pains for a few days afterwards but is now champing at the bit to compete on the world stage, though he’s got a year to wait before he can test his strength against an international line-up in Florida.
