Fife-trained horse being lined up for bid at getting fourth time lucky in £16,000 feature race at Kelso

Ned Tanner is being lined up for a shot at getting fourth time lucky in this coming Saturday’s £16,000 feature race at Kelso.

Trained by Nick Alexander in Fife, the ten-year-old bay gelding is set to be ridden by Sean Quinlan in the Luckytiger.co.uk Bet 20 Win 20 Wishing Well Handicap Chase, a near-three-mile race he finished seventh in last year, fourth two years ago and second in 2023.

His last win was in Ayr in March 2025 but he’s managed two third-placed finishes on the bounce at Perth in May and October this year and Alexander is hoping he can improve on that recent record.

“He ran well to finish third at Perth and he always tends to come on for his first run of the season,” he said.

“Although he was placed in four of his eights starts last season, he did seem to have lost his way a little and I felt he was never quite right.

“As a result, the handicapper has relented very gradually and he is now 11lb lower than he was a year ago.

“Combined with a few things we have changed at home, the break will have done him good and his rating coming down will be a big help.

“There should be plenty of fun to be had if we can find the key to his revival.”

Nine entries are in for that race, the fifth of six at the meeting, with the others vying for its top prize of £8,450 including Cadell, winner by almost four lengths in 2025’s edition in first-time blinkers, with Jack Power in the saddle.

That was a third course win for the eight-year-old bay gelding, owned by the Kelso Lowflyers syndicate and jointly trained by Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore in Perth and Kinross.

“He’s not the easiest to predict but he is a proven winner and he loves the track,” said Russell.

“He is at his best when able to dominate in smallish fields and the Kelso racegoers should see plenty of him again this season.”

Busty Boy, trained by Daragh Bourke in Dumfries and Galloway and with Jedburgh’s Callum Bewley booked as jockey, is also entered for the 3.10pm race.

Heart Above, trained in Cumbria by Dianne Sayer, is another regular visitor to the Borders track and the eight-year-old bay gelding is set to make his fifth appearance of the 2026-27 season in the concluding 3.45pm Luckytiger.co.uk Best Odds Guaranteed the Night Before Handicap Hurdle over two miles and almost five furlongs, with Charlie Maggs riding, having notched up a third win there at May’s ladies’ day.

Also among 16 provisional entries for that race, offering a top prize of £7,393, are Selkirk trainer Katie Scott’s Dream’s Ka and It’s All About You, trained at Ewan Whillans’ Hawick yard, with Quinlan and Craig Nichol lined up as their riders.

Gates open at 10.45am and the meeting’s first race is off at 12.55pm.

Tickets cost £25 in advance or £30 on the day. For details, go to https://kelso-races.co.uk/events/wishing-well-chase-day-2026/
