800-plus-mile round trip pays off for Borders racehorse trainer Katie Scott as Naana’s Shadow chalks up fifth win

An 820-plus-mile round trip paid off for Borders racehorse trainer Katie Scott as she notched up a fourth win of the year for Naana’s Shadow south of the border at West Sussex’s Goodwood course last Thursday.

Jockey Oisin Murphy rode the 5-1 joint-favourite to a first-placed finish almost two lengths ahead of Connor Planas on USS Charleston, trained by Suffolk’s Lemos Souza, in that day’s five-furlong Buccellati Handicap at 4.10pm to land a top prize of £25,770.

Up against a field of 18 on ladies’ day at the five-day Qatar Goodwood Festival, that was the three-year-old grey filly’s third win in four outings following others at York and Epsom in Surrey in June, both also with Murphy in the saddle, and fourth of 2026, the other having been at Catterick in North Yorkshire in April, with Darragh Keenan riding.

Scott was chuffed to bits to see Naana’s Shadow, owned by South Lanarkshire’s Summerstorm Bloodstock Syndicate, make it to a handful of wins for her Lindean yard near Selkirk since registering her first at Wolverhampton in the West Midlands last October, with Hollie Doyle aboard, telling ITV Racing: “It’s amazing.

“She was up 17lb since Epsom, so I thought it was a big ask.

“She’s not the biggest filly but she’s got a big heart in her.

“She’s still a bit to go to be the best we’ve trained because we’ve got Luna a Inbhir Nis in the yard, but I’d say she’ll be the fastest.”

Naana’s Shadow’s win at Goodwood was Scott’s second in the space of ten days, the other having been with Cotai Starlight at Ayr on Monday, July 20, with Jason Hart as rider.
