Preview: Gould Piano Trio and Robert Plane

For over 20 years the Gould Piano Trio has remained at the forefront of the international chamber music scene, appearing at major festivals and venues in the UK and abroad, including regular visits to the United States.

With Robert Plane, principal clarinet with the Welsh National Orchestra, the trio will be playing a very interesting programme opening with Beethoven’s lyrical clarinet trio Op.11 and ending with Dvorak’s powerfully romantic Piano Trio Op.65, one of the greatest trios in the repertoire.

In the middle they will play Contrasts, a very exciting clarinet trio by Bartok, and then John Casken, the celebrated composer from the depths of Northumberland, will introduce his own piece for violin and piano to be played by Lucy Gould and an old friend to Kelso music, Ben Frith. John had a number of his works performed last year, his 60th, 
by the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

It is probably the first time that a composer has been present at the music society to introduce his own work, making this a very special occasion and one not to be missed.

In the morning the group will hold a workshop for about 150 children in the church from six local schools when they will be introduced to the various instruments and some of the music they will be playing. When Laura van der Heijden and Tom Poster came in October their workshop was an enormous success. These workshops are a great opportunity for children to experience and have explained to them music of the highest quality. The workshops are funded by Enterprise Music Scotland, the funding wing of Creative Scotland, for Scotland’s music societies.
