Recently appointed Principal Cello with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Philip was already a rising star among cellists when he played for Music in Peebles in 2010.

For this eagerly awaited return visit, Philip will play three of Bach’s Suites for Solo Cello. This sublime music represents the pinnacle of the cello repertoire and Philip Higham’s performances, in recital and on CD, are considered among the finest.

Philip was born in Edinburgh and still lives there. He studied with Ruth Beauchamp at St Mary’s Music School and subsequently at the Royal Northern College of Music with Emma Ferrand and Ralph Kirshbaum.

He was the first UK cellist to win first prize in the Bach Leipzig competition and went on to win many other major competitions and is now in great demand as a solo performer all over the world.

He has been described as ‘possessing that rare combination of refined technique with subtle and expressive musicianship... all the qualities of a world-class artist’ (The Strad), and has been praised for his ‘expansive but tender playing’ (Gramophone).

You can hear Philip’s breathtaking performance on Tuesday, March 7, at 7.30pm. Tickets £14 (£7 if accompanied by child under 12) from www.eastgatearts.com or 01721 725777.
