WATCH: Kus first Bandit in over a decade to score 21 points

The victory virtually guaranteed the Bandits’ qualification for the end-of-season play-offs and afterwards the Czech Republic rider was naturally delighted.

“I have been waiting a long time to score a maximum like that,” he said. “It is the first time in my career I have scored 21, and the first time since May 2011 that I have managed a maximum, because I always seem to have dropped a point somewhere along the way.”

Kus has been in tremendou s form for Berwick over the past month when he has been riding at reserve, and has often been the match-winner with his performances.

This was the pinnacle of his season so far, and the fact that the victory meant Berwick will now progress to the play-offs was the icing on the cake.

“It’s always difficult to race against one of your former clubs, and I was a little nervous before the start,” he said.

“It was also my last meeting at reserve as I move back up into the main body of the team next month, but to be honest, I am riding with confidence at the moment and it doesn’t really matter to me which number I have on my back.”

Kus has often been described as an ‘enigma,’ but he added: “I know there were a few raised eyebrows when I signed for Berwick at the start of the season, but I love riding here, the team is going well and I honestly think we can do well in the play-offs.”

Kus’s performance had the statisticians searching through the record books to see when the last time a Berwick rider achieved a 21 point score.

Promoter and team manager John Anderson said: “it took us a long time to think back when the last time it might have been achieved, but we think Claus Kristensen might have done it over a decade ago against Swindon.

“But Matej’s achievement will go down in Berwick history - it was a performance which will be remembered for a long time to come.”
