Opportunity knocks for Melrose to claim pole position in rugby’s Scottish National League Division 1 this coming Saturday as they’re at home to current table-toppers Ayr.

Head coach Ian Chisholm’s team go into that game second in the table on 11 points, four shy of their visitors from South Ayrshire, both having played three matches.

Kick-off at the Greenyards is at 3pm.

Melrose will be looking to follow up back-to back victories after beating second-bottom Biggar 36-0 away on Saturday gone, seven days after handing out a 68-7 hiding at home to Glasgow High Kelvinside, but Ayr are on an even better run of form, having notched up three bonus-point wins out of three so far this season.

The Borderers lost the corresponding fixture last season 31-30 in January and were also beaten at Ayr, by 35-31 last September.

Their tries in South Lanarkshire were scored by Struan Hutchison, Roly Brett, James Brown, Oliver MacKenzie and Bruce Colvine at the double, with Hutchison converting three.

Chisholm was delighted to see his side claim their second win of the season and is hoping to keep up that momentum this weekend, telling the club’s Facebook page: “I’m really, really proud of keeping Biggar’s score at nil – I’ve come here a lot of times and it’s really difficult to win – and also of how professional and machine-like we were and we need to carry that into next week’s game against Ayr.

“That was a statement from us. We know how good we are and our opening-day loss at Glasgow Hutchesons’ Aloysians was a real blip. We’re getting there.”
