Hawick comeback sees off Currie Chieftains 35-13 in their latest Premiership encounter

Hawick skipper Shawn Muir has insisted that the defending league champions refused to panic despite being 13-10 down at half-time in last Saturday's home Premiership encounter against Currie Chieftains.

What followed in the second half was very impressive from the Borders side as they registered 32 unanswered points to win 35-13 and secure a four-try bonus point.

“We knew what we had to do coming out the blocks,” Muir told told Borders rugby TV. “Start fast against Currie. They have started the season unbelievably well but if I’m honest they’ve not played a team like us.

"We know when we play to our bet we’ll test anybody in this league and we knew we just had to get our big men into the game early, the likes of Jae Linton, Dalton Redpath would be a handful for anyone.

"We were happy with our first half. We defended really well.

"Obviously Currie are a dangerous team and we knew they would have chances, we knew we would be under the cosh a little bit.

“But look, when we went in at half-time there was no panic. We knew just: ‘Get back to the structures, get a little bit more ball’ because after that 20 minutes we didn’t see very much of it.

"We knew just to get back to our game plan, get back to our structure and we would get chances again.”

Muir also outlined his delight at preventing Currie scoring any points after the interval.

"That was the pleasing thing for me,” he added. “Is we’ve nilled Currie in the second half which is no mean feat to do and we were bang on.

"Everybody came firing out the traps, attack, defence, everything was working for us and it was a really good second half.

"But if I’m being honest, I still don’t think we’ve hit our best yet.

"I still think there’s a couple more gears to go and we’ll work hard from now to find that for the remainder of the season.

"We just need to keep winning. We’ve reacted since the Marr defeat. We had a few harsh words after that, that wasn’t us and the response since then has been amazing."

Hawick’s points against Currie came via tries for Andrew Mitchell, Fraser Renwick, Charlie Welsh and skipper Muir, plus three conversions and three penalties by Kirk Ford.

The Chieftains’ 13 first half points arrived courtesy of a try, conversion and two penalties by captain Jamie Forbes.

Forbes said: “We believe we’re a good team and I think we did go in at half-time on top, even though Hawick started really well. We were pretty positive and knew what we needed to do in the second half – we just weren’t able to do it.”

Hawick, third in the division with 18 points from five matches, continue their campaign in a local derby at bottom club Jed-Forest this Saturday with kick-off at 3pm.

Muir added: “Jed haven’t started the season great but we know what Borders teams are like.

"Even years ago we were like that. Backs against the wall are when teams are most dangerous.

"So we will prepare for Jed like we prepared for Currie. The boys are raring to go.”
