Rugby: Rugby survivors Hawick freeze out Boroughmuir

Hawick managed to beat off the freeze at Meggetland yesterday as once again most of the weekend rugby fixtures involving local teams fell victim to the weather.

With snow scuppering many matches in Scotland the BT Cup game between holders Boroughmuir and Hawick (a repeat of last year’s Cup Final) saw the Greens post a 23-14 win, chalking up their second win at Meggetland this season.

Steven Anderson scored Hawick’s two tries with Neil Renwick kicking the rest. Hawick will host Melrose next Saturday in Round 3.

Langholm were the only other Borders side to play but they lost to Portobello 32-22 at Milntown in East League 2.

With Stirling losing to Premiership Champions Heriot’s, Gala now know exactly what they have to do to avoid a relegation showdown with the second placed team in National 1 at the end of the season. If they can beat Currie or draw with a try bonus, they will go past Stirling. That game, which was snowed off a few hours before kick off yesterday, could be played on Saturday, February 27, the same day that Selkirk and Melrose are likely to play their final league match in the Premiership, another game which was a victim to the weather this weekend.
