But despite the presence of three professional players in their side Heriot’s were made to work hard for their win by a Gala side that led going into the final quarter.

Gala, however, will rue a less than perfect first half in which their kicking from hand lacked direction and in which they turned over too much ball allowing Heriot’s to do what they are good at, running from defensive positions.

A penalty each by David O’Hagan for Gala and Graham Wilson for Heriot’s accounted for the game’s points in the first quarter before Heriot’s scored through Russell Nimmo from a driven line-out.

Two penalties by O’Hagan and then an interception try by Craig Robertson, while Heriot’s were down to thirteen men put Gala ahead by 14-8.

But two tries from replacement David Semple from breaks by Cammy Fergusson and Glenn Bryce and a conversion by Wilson game regained the lead for the visitors only for Gala to score in the 80th minute when Euan Dods surged from a line-out, O’Hagan’s conversion attempt narrowly missing the posts.
