Winning double for Borders club's youngsters in Edinburgh new year sprint supporting events

Borders athletics club Tweed Leader Jed Track pulled off a clean sweep in the age-grade children’s races staged as part of the supporting bill for 2023’s Edinburgh new year sprint.

Robyn Lees beat her sister Ava to win the 200m handicap for youngsters aged ten to 13 at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Sports Centre in a time of 22.25 seconds off a mark of 57m last Friday, with their TLJT clubmate Freddie Wilson following behind in fourth place and Jedburgh’s Joe McDade in sixth.

Craig Tindle, younger brother of main new year sprint victor Scott, won the 200m handicap for youths aged 13 to 16 in 22.44, from a mark of 23m, with TLJT clubmate Tess Renwick third and Kelso’s Daniel Lawson and Lewis Fleming second and fifth respectively.

Tindle had to make do with second place in the 90m youths’ handicap, though, losing out to Aberdeen’s Cameron Kennedy, with Ava Lees third.

TLJT also claimed victory in the 90m ladies’ handicap, Evie Renwick crossing the line first, from a mark of 6.5m, in 10.44. West Linton’s Stacey Downie was third, Jedburgh’s Zoe Blair fourth and TLJT’s Caris Brus fifth.

Only one Borderer contested the 90m veterans’ handicap, won by Giffnock North Athletics Club’s David Edelman, from a mark of 26.5m, in 9.32, and that was fifth-place finisher John Fleming, of Kelso.

Kelso’s Matthew Fleming was third in the 800m open handicap, with TLJT’s Kevin Wood fourth and Innerleithen’s Dean Whiteford fifth.
