The current school closures did not prevent Newtown and St Boswells from ensuring they continued with their school traditions.

Both primary schools held their Virtual Sports Day last Friday, in which children and families from both took part in a variety of fun races and games, finishing the morning off with their Sports Day picnic.

House captains were on hand to launch the day with motivational speeches for their houses.

Ross Maunder, head teacher at both schools, explained: “With the current school closures, our staff have been working hard to ensure we are continuing with high-quality learning and teaching.

“Our Virtual Sports Day provided a fantastic opportunity for a week of sports-themed home learning and to unite our whole school community for their annual Sports Day.

“It was a fantastic and fun-filled morning, and I was very proud of all our children for having fun and taking part.”

Before the event, Mr Maunder reiterated that St Boswells and Newtown had been aiming, as a school team, to ensure the children received high standards of education and also enjoyed the experiences they would normally have in their school calendar.

“Sports Day is always one of the highlight of the year that brings together the whole school community and we felt it was important to still hold this,” he added.
