Hawick jockey Rowan Scott makes sure Fast Fred lives up to name at Musselburgh meeting

Hawick jockey Rowan Scott ensured 10-1 shot Fast Fred lived up to his name at Musselburgh Racecourse on Sunday.

Scott guided the six-year-old bay gelding, trained by North Yorkshire’s Phillip Makin, to a win by a length in the East Lothian track’s 5.45pm Sky Bet Extra Places Handicap over a mile and four furlongs to lands its top prize of £15,462.

Zak Wheatley was runner-up in a field of 14 on Fox Journey for another North Yorkshire trainer, Declan Carroll.

That was Fast Fred’s first win since one at Carlisle last July, with Pippa Brown riding, and fifth all told.

It was also Scott’s second in the space of two days, having finished first at Southwell in Nottinghamshire over a mile and three furlongs the day before on Al Azd at 6-4 for Roger Varian’s Suffolk stables, earning £6,480.

Scott was the only Borders jockey among the winners at Musselburgh’s seven-race meeting on Sunday but Hawick’s Rhys Elliott and Greg Fairley managed second places.

The former did so over a mile on 28-1 outsider Dwindling Funds for Jim Goldie’s East Renfrewshire yard and the latter over seven furlongs on Qazaq at 14-1 for Dumfries and Galloway’s Iain Jardine, with another Hawick rider, Jason Hart, third on Benacre for North Yorkshire’s Charlie Johnston.

Hart made it to the winners’ enclosure at Newcastle the day after, however, after finishing first over five furlongs on Rock of England at 7-1 for North Yorkshire’s Paul Midgley, beating another of Midgley’s horses, Herakles, with Mark Winn in the saddle, by three-quarters of a length to earn prize money of £3,978.

Kelso Racecourse holds its second meeting of the month, its Buccleuch Cup raceday, next Monday.

Gates open at noon and racing starts two hours later.

Tickets cost £20 in advance and £5 more on the day. For details, go to https://kelso-races.co.uk/events/buccleuch-cup-raceday-2026/
