Orienteering: Capital start for Roxburgh Reivers

The traditional start of the orienteering season saw Roxburgh Reivers join competitors from all over the UK in Edinburgh.

The weekend consisted of a night race, a Scottish and UK urban league, a Burns Night ceilidh and final flourish with a traditional race in Holyrood Park.

The Friday night sprint round the complex Kings Buildings produced no winners for the local club but proved enjoyable with a large number of runners and a large number of controls to find.

The more serious Saturday’s urban race was based at The Meadows and took runners into The Exchange, Grassmarket, Royal Mile and George Square areas. Lindsey Knox took first place on W55 for maximum points and Pauline McAdam made it a double for Roxburgh Reivers by taking the runners up spot. Jedburgh Running Festival 10k winner Kirstin Maxwell had a great run for second place on the Woman’s open class, and Douglas Henderson just missed the podium with fourth on M65.

Sunday’s race, on the hilly terrain of Arthurs Seat, produced no Roxburgh winners but was a pleasant end to a busy few days.

A Tour de France theme was held over the weekend and Ian Maxwell and Lindsey Knox were category winners of the sprint stage on Saturday, both by one second rather than the fractions seen in the bike race.

The next local event is at Bowhill on February 20.
