Announcing a target figure of £5000, Jedburgh said: “The golf club has been an integral part of our town since 1892. It is a community club which has been a key part of sporting activity and socialising throughout the years and is a great place for family and friends alike to enjoy some time together.”

The committee had worked hard in recent years to run the club to a high standard on a shoestring budget.

“However, this budget relies massively on three things – membership income, fundraising activities and visitor income,” said the club.

“Understandably, during these uncertain times, some members have not yet fully paid their membership fees owing to financial uncertainty. With the current isolation guidelines, we cannot hold any group fundraising activities and, also, no visitors can play our course, resulting in a huge loss of income to the club.”

Greenkeeping staff were still able to work but money also needed to be spent on seeds, fertilisers and machinery upkeep to help them the course in top condition.

“We are hoping to raise money to help us to do this through the generosity of our local community, who understand the key role the golf club plays in the town every year,” said the club.

“We know life itself, and the current situation we all find ourselves in, is far more important and serious than a game of golf. But it has given us an insight in to what life would be like without the club. It really would be a huge loss to the community and leave a big hole in the town.

“The golf club is not receiving any funding from the Government to assist us during this time. We understand not everyone is in a financial position to be able to do so, and we do not want to make anyone financially unstable – but we are asking, if you can, to make any donation, small or large. It would be massively appreciated during this time.”

Peebles, Hawick and Torwoodlee were among other local clubs launching similar ventures.
