Borders clubs adopt new rules and ease back into competition

Clubs have largely been able to roll these out successfully, with strict instructions on group numbers and social distancing being respected by players.

In last week’s update, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a further easing of restrictions, which included how many people from different households could meet each other.

For golfers, this now means that, at the discretion of the club, groups of up to three players consisting of multiple households are permitted, as long as they adhere to the Government’s physical distancing rules.

A group of four golfers is permitted, if they can ensure only three households are represented in that group.

Competition play within the club may only resume in accordance with the updated guidelines.

There should be no open events run at this time – this is based on the travel restrictions that remain in force and which are very clear in terms of staying local for exercise.

While some of the changes have been effective since last week, clubs might need longer to implement amendments to tee sheets and it is for each club to determine the correct time for them to adopt any of the changes permitted.

Selkirk Golf Club representative Alan McGhee said: “It is good to see golfers back on The Hill, enjoying the good weather and honing their games to perfection – as well they should, with competitions due to start on Saturday, July 4.

“Up until now, players are playing in ones or twos, but now they are permitted to play in threes.

“Visitors will be most welcome now but they must book a tee time by phoning the club secretary on 01750 20621 (clubhouse) or 20519 (home).

“Alas, the clubhouse remains out of bounds for the moment.”
