Preston Athletic 0-1 Selkirk

PRESTON ATHLETIC0

SELKIRK1

Selkirk left the Pennypit with the three points, but Preston’s players will wonder how they did not take anything from this game.

Time and again, particularly in the first half, the home side cut Selkirk open at will but were unable to turn the chances into goals, either through poor finishing, good defending or slack final passes.

The first of many first half chances fell to Josh McGonigal but the striker fired wide. Then Jack McCue on his debut broke through the heart of the defence but again shot wide, Juan Belope outstripped the defence but his shot also managed to evade the target.

The chances kept coming – next McGonigal’s neat turn and shot went just over.

Gary O’Connor had Selkirk’s first chance on 30 minutes but he too had caught the bug and curled an effort well wide, before Jon McInally’s flick hit the bar but was cleared.

The hold up play and pace of McGonigal and Belope were causing the Selkirk defence all kinds of problems but they just could not get the crucial opening.

The sucker punch came a minute into the second half as a driving run down the right wing and a neat cut-back found Kayde Reynolds who rifled home.

Preston continued to press in the second period, as sub Gary Nicholson found space time and again on the left whilst the chances continued to fall to McGonigal and Belope.

Selkirk then created a number of chances to seal the points late in the game, with the best falling to O’Connor who hit the bar from five yards out.
