The Galashiels side were cruising at 2-0 in injury time before their North Lanarkshire hosts, hitherto barely a threat to their visitors’ goal, pulled one back as substitute Lee Whitmore turned a cut-back past Fraser Morton in goal.

Their hosts had a couple of chances after that to level the scoreline, though that would have been an injustice taking the whole game into account.

Defender Ben Herdman scored his first competitive goal for Gala after 55 appearances in the 17th minute when he bundled home Phil Addison’s corner.

Scott Taylor McKenzie struck the bar and saw another 20-yard shot sail just wide as Gala dominated on an excellent 4G surface.

The Borderers looked to have wrapped up the points 10 minutes from time when McKenzie played a delightful ball down the left to sub Sean Ward, who drilled in a low cross narrowly missed by the onrushing Addison.

However, Ross Aitchison popped up at the back post to slam the ball into the roof of the net.

Cumbernauld rallied late on and pulled one back, but Gala held on for all three points and only their second-ever victory at Broadwood.
