Edinburgh City win Lowland league title

Edinburgh City have retained the Lowland League championship title with a 1-0 victory over Stirling University at Meadowbank.

The capital club have achieved their success with two games to spare and are now 18 points ahead of second-placed Stirling.

Spartans were the only side that mathematically could have caught Gary Jardine’s men prior to yesterday’s fixtures, but captain Dougie Gair’s solo effort in the second half ensured the trophy remains at City.

They will now face the Highland League winners for the right to play-off against East Stirlingshire, with a place in the Scottish League at stake.

Elsewhere, Selkirk conceded the only goal of the game three minutes from time in a 1-0 defeat to Cumbernauld Colts at Broadwood. Michael Oliver was on target to edge a win for the hosts.

Gala Fairydean Rovers thrashed bottom side Threave Rovers 5-0 at Netherdale. Jack Hay Hay scored a double in the first half, and Stuart Noble did likewise in the second before Lee Stephen completed the rout.

Spartans edged out city rivals Edinburgh University 4-3 at Peffermill. Aaron Murrell gave the visitors the lead only for the match to be turned on its head with goals from the students’ Scott McCrory-Irving and Jack Guthrie. Murrell got his second from the spot two minutes before the interval to level things before Mike Bruce and David Greenhill made it 4-2 to Spartans. Duncan Black added a late consolation for the hosts.

Dean Renyard’s strike was enough to give Gretna 2008 all three points against Whitehill Welfare at Raydale Park, while BSC Glasgow were 2-0 winners at Islecroft over Dalbeattie Star.
