Borders goalkeeper Riley Simpson a prize guy

Borderer Riley Simpson has been named as Youth Football Scotland’s player of the week after saving three penalties for Hibernian Community 2011s.

The Duns 14-year-old, a pupil at the town’s Berwickshire High School, pulled off those saves against Broxburn, North Berwick and Edinburgh’s Spartans.

Head coach Jordan Finnie was among the first to congratulate his goalkeeper on that accolade, telling Youth Football Scotland’s website: “Riley fully deserves this award.

“His performances over the last few months have been outstanding and he’s played a massive part in the turnaround of this team.

“He’s got everything you want in a goalkeeper at this age. He has excellent shot-stopping skills, commanding presence, communication and a mentality to make big saves in big moments.

“His three consecutive penalty saves in big games summed him up perfectly.

“We, as his coaches, are proud to see the development of Riley as a young goalkeeper, and both us and the lads in the team are lucky to have him. Well done, Riley.”
