Berwick Rangers: Manager Stuart Malcolm explains fine run of four wins in five games

After Liam Buchanan’s powerful 43rd-minute strike gave Berwick Rangers a 1-0 home success over Tranent Juniors on Tuesday night, Shielfield Park boss Stuart Malcolm explained a recent upsurge in form which has seen his side win four of their last five games in the Scottish Lowland Football League.

Malcolm told the Berwickshire News: “Instead of having 11 or 12 players trying to battle through games, we have had some injuries back that have given us options, allowing us to change things from the bench.

"Huge credit must go to the players.”

But Malcolm’s joy at having up to 18 fit players in his squad has proved to be short-lived, with Alex Harris’s hamstring injury picked up last weekend added to by similar injuries on Tuesday for Jamie Stevenson, Grant Nelson and Cammy Graham.

Berwick’s win against Tranent came three days after Malcolm’s men recorded a 2-1 home Lowland League victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers.

In front of 372 fans at Shielfield Park, the hosts’ Liam Buchanan had an early ‘goal’ ruled out for offside when he converted the rebound after Alex Harris’s initial effort had been saved.

And it was Gala who took the lead in spectacular style after 21 minutes when Danny Galbraith’s unstoppable swerving shot from 25 yards found the net.

Berwick then proceeded to create and miss several chances before they finally drew level from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time, Buchanan netting after Sean Stewart had been fouled in the box.

Into the second-half and – just after Gala’s Zander Murray had headed narrowly wide from a Galbraith cross – the hosts won it on 53 minutes when Michael Travis headed in a Jamie Stevenson corner.

Berwick, 10th with 33 points from 22 games, continue their league campaign at Bo’ness United this Saturday with kick-off at 3pm.

Harris, Stevenson and Nelson will miss out and Graham is doubtful.

"If we apply ourselves the way we have in games for the past four, five or six weeks we will give ourselves a really good chance to go and get a result,” Malcolm said.

"Our away form hasn’t been great so it’s something we look to improve on. Hopefully we have a big enough squad to make changes.”
