Edinburgh U16s 26-19 Borders and East Lothian

The first ten minutes of the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy under-16 final saw Edinburgh dominate possession and territory, yet a number of unforced errors meant that the Borders & East Lothian defence held out against an exciting Edinburgh side.

With their first real attacking opportunity for came for the Borders and East lothian team when Liam Herdman (Kelso HS/RFC) chased his own kick only for opposite man to stop the attack.

Shortly after, play returned to the Edinburgh 22 and the next try came courtesy of Herdman¹s offload to Paul Cunningham (Knox Academy) who crashed over. The inside centre from Haddington then converted his own try to give the Borders & East Lothian a healthy 12-0 half time lead.

Edinburgh restarted purposefully and within three minutes, had crossed in the corner and minutes later, broke through the defensive line in their own half and a good offload to support allowed them to race the remaining 50 metres to score.

The Borders & East Lothian, however, remained in the game and after finally having some territory to enjoy, Robbie McCallum (Loretto) scored after running a tight line through the defence. The conversion was good, giving Edinburgh a seven point deficit to chase with ten minutes remaining.

After sucking defenders in with some good phases the ball went out to Stewart’s Melville fullback Blain who crossed the line before succeeding with the conversion. Edinburgh again looked to get the score that would win the game and with little time remaining scored in the corner with the conversion being added with just ten seconds left.
