Cycling legend Graeme Obree has been appointed as the event Ambassador for the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders 2016.

Known for his unusual riding positions and for the Old Faithful bicycle he built which included parts from a washing machine Obree twice broke the world hour record, in July 1993 and April 1994, and was the 4000m individual pursuit world champion in 1993 and 1995.

The increasingly popular Tour O the Borders is expected to attract up to 3,000 pre-registered riders who can select either the 88km or 120km close road route. Starting and finishing in Peebles both routes wind through the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders passing some of the most beautiful and unspoilt landscape in the whole of the UK.

Speaking at the event launch Obree said; “I’m delighted to be the event ambassador for the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders this year.

“It’s always a treat for cyclists to have the roads to themselves and the route looks really enjoyable through some of Scotland’s most beautiful countryside. I can’t wait to get on my bike and experience it and I’d encourage others to take on the challenge and join me.”

Obree, who will be taking part in the 120km sportive in August, was also joined by representatives from the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK. Event organisers are encouraging any monies raised to be donated to the National Charity Partnership. As well as funding the vital and ongoing work of both charities, the National Charity Partnership, which includes Tesco, will deliver projects nationwide aimed at inspiring millions of people to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

“I’m passionate about encouraging people of all ages to lead a healthy and active lifestyle which is good for both mental and physical health,” added Obree.
