Curling: GB selection for Amy Bryce

The 17-year-old Event Management student began the selection process, carried out by the British Olympic Association, last June and, although she was provisionally selected back in September, has had to keep it a secret up until this week when selections were ratified.

On receiving the news, Amy was absolutely over the moon and for a number of days she just couldn’t believe it.

“Looking back to when I started Curling, I would never have dreamt that I would now be representing Team GB at an Olympic Games. I can’t believe it,” she said.

Amy, who will play at Third in the team, is currently in Aberdeen competing in the Scottish Junior finals, she has a further training session in Perth next Wednesday and then flies to London on Sunday, February 7 where she meets the rest of the team (Ross Whyte (Dumfries) - Skip; Callum Kinnear (Perth) - Second; Mili Smith (Perth) - Lead) at Bisham Abbey before flying out to Oslo. Competition starts on February 12 with a game against Korea.

To gain her selection the Borders curler attended a skills day at Braehead Arena in Glasgow. Following this, a short list was drawn up and Amy was asked to prepare a presentation to a panel of three. Following the presentation in September, Amy was notified by letter of her selection but was not allowed to inform the press as the British Olympic Association had to ratify all team members before finalising the final list.

Amy is part of a hugely successful curling family with older brother Cameron already having achieved international fame and younger sibling Angus also proving a force to be reckoned with on the ice. All three are supported by Club Sport Roxburgh.

“I would not be in the position I am in had it not been for the continued support of the local sports council and I can’t thank them enough,” added Amy.
