Bowls: Forrest falls at final hurdle

Hawick bowls supremo Julie Forrest's dream of winning her first World Indoor tour title was snatched away yesterday.

Forrest, who has eight World Indoor Bowls Council titles on her impressive list of honours, lost out in the mixed pairs final alongside partner Alex Marshall, against fellow Scott Darren Burnett and Ipswich player Katherine Rednall.

Playing at Norfolk’s Potters Resort Marshall and Forrest made a slow start before eventually losing the first set 11-5. However, they came flying out of the blocks in the second, chalking up a full count for a confidence-boosting four shots. Unfortunately is was not to be and following an almighty battle between Forrest and Rednall the Borders star and her partner lost out 14-9.

Afterwards Marshall, who has 20 world bowls titles to his name, paid tribute to his partner: “Julie led really well and it’s a good job she was there,” he said.

“She compared well with Katherine and did her job at the front. I disappointed with my own performance, but you’ve got to hand it to Darren. He was phenomenal.”

Earlier in the week Forrest lost out 4-9, 8-6, 2-1 in a dramatic ladies singles quarter-final against City of Ely’s Ellen Falkner.
