The perfect gift this Christmas – the chance to hear your family and friends laugh again

Nearly a million Scots are said to suffer from some degree of hearing loss according to the RNID. And with Christmas offering lots of social occasions, family events and bustle, that hearing loss can become even more noticeable.

Daniel Foxcroft, audiologist at the Galashiels branch of House of Hearing in Bank Street, those busy environments can be socially isolating for people whose hearing is muffled.

“For people with moderate hearing loss, who ‘muddle along’ as it were, crowded noisy situations can really affect them. A trip to a panto, a meal out, even having the family round over Christmas, can make their hearing loss more pronounced.”

That sense of social isolation is dispiriting when everyone else around you is having a jolly time.

But, Daniel Foxcroft says there are things that can help.

“Perhaps up until now you’ve managed fine without a hearing aid … we can test people’s hearing, and if required, fit new hearing devices in time for the festive season, giving them back the gift of joining in and embracing life.

“Or, if you have an older hearing aid, it may no longer be fit for purpose. There have been huge advances in technology, so a device that previously worked for you may no longer be giving you the best outcome possible.”
