The day dawned bleak, with early morning showers giving rise to fears of a washout, but the weather cleared and although there was no sun for most of the day, conditions were perfect for the riders who assembled behind the town hall just before 8am. Cornet Wilson, aided by his right and left-hand men, Andrew Strangeways and James Fairbairn, led a cavalcade of 383 followers to the Waterin’ Stane.
