NOSTALGIA: Borders bookworms in 1995

“Read more books, watch less television.” That was the message from Edenside Primary School pupil Heather Shaw this week back in 1995.

She was one of hundreds of Borders children who took part in a “read-a-thon” to raise money for new books for the classroom. Gold and silver medals were presented to pupils at the Kelso school and at Kirkhope Primary School in Ettrickbridge for their reading performance in the World Book Partners In Excellence reading programme. The children read a minimum of seven books in a seven-week period and collected sponsorship for doing so. Our old photograph shows youngsters from Selkirk and Kelso with their medals.
