Works timescale extended

It has been announced that the works currently underway at Dunbar Leisure Pool are to be last longer than originally thought.

On Monday October 26, works commenced, to upgrade the key operational components of the centre, in an investment totalling in excess of £1.6million, which will secure the longevity of this premier East Lothian visitor attraction for years to come.

To date, the major task of dismantling the existing air handling units, which regulate the temperature throughout the building, is well underway; as is the dismantling of the main electrical distribution boards.

The swimming pool, now completely drained, has been transformed into a maze of scaffolding, as specialised tradesmen make the necessary repairs to the flume staircase and internal structure.

While significant progress has been made; there’s still lots to do. The poolside shower and toilets are getting a refresh and brand new low-energy light fittings are being installed throughout the building. Contractors are making progress on the removal and installation of the approximate 5km worth of electrical cables which circulate the building.

It was initially hoped that all of the works scheduled for the maintenance upgrade would be complete within 8 weeks. Regrettably this time scale has had to be extended, as unforeseen delays in the production of the custom built main electrical control panel and anomalies found in the rewiring work, amongst other issues, are curbing progress in the schedule of works.

It is now hoped that the Swimming Pool will be able to reopen early /mid-January; with the Bodyworks Gym, Activity Hall and Health Suite, (with its brand new Steam Room) reopening a short time thereafter.

Bill Axon, General Manager continues; “On behalf of enjoyleisure I would like to personally express our gratitude to all of our customers, members and staff for their patience and understanding while we complete these important upgrades. We sincerely regret delaying the reopening of the centre, however given the magnitude of the task at hand, we would not be willing to reopen the Centre until all necessary upgrades have been successfully completed and are compliant with relevant regulations.”

“We are grateful to our partners East Lothian Council specifically the Property Maintenance team, and our contractors Blackbourne, for their significant progress to date and their continued dedication to delivering the objectives of this project to such a high standard.”
