WATCH: ‘Borders Youth For Yes’ release video

Scottish Borders Youth For Yes have released a film showing young people explain why they will be voting for Scottish independence in the referendum on September 18.

The short video was created by three Hawick youths and features interviews with young people in the Scottish Borders aged from 16 to 26.

Sixteen and 17-year-olds will be allowed to vote for the first time in this referendum on September 18.

Corin Anderson, 17, who was in charge of the audio for the film, said: “More and more people are starting to think about what way they are voting. We do hope this film encourages young people to think about what independence could mean for them, but that’s not all.

“We hope the passion portrayed will help people realise that this referendum is about them and their own futures and encourage them to do some research into both sides of the debate if they haven’t already done so.”

Robert Scott, 16, who was behind the camera added: “We felt it was time that we as young people did something to express our views!”

Christina Hendry, 19, who directed the film, believes the film show that young people are engaged in the debate and in politics.

“We feel that young people are often stigmatised as having no interest in current affairs or political campaigns and we hope that this film shows otherwise,” she said.

“It was produced by three young people with the equipment they had at hand and includes young people stating why they are voting Yes – showing that they’ve clearly thought about it themselves and researched the reasons for independence.”
