Variety is the spice of fundraising for The Dramateurs

Galashiels-based theatre group The Dramateurs has announced it has chosen Mike Leigh's acclaimed stage play Abigail's Party for its annual production in the town's MacArts Centre in October.

The company is hoping that the hilarious and acerbic satire on middle-class suburban aspirations will emulate the success it enjoyed last year with Liz Lochhead’s Good Things.

To help fund and promote the forthcoming production, The Dramateurs are hosting a Variety Showcase in the MacArts on Friday (May 27) at 7.30pm.

Compered by Phil Orr, the show will feature the many and diverse talents of the company, including John Nichol, Robin Murray, Chris Achenbach, Susan Dickson, Rebekah Chapman, Sam Clellant, Susan Shearer, Julia Noble and Pamela Millan.

“There will be comedy, song, burlesque, classical music and monologues: in fact, something for everyone,” said producer Andy Thoms.

Mr Thoms is hoping for a large and enthusiastic turnout to boost the company after the disappointment of having to shelve its scheduled spring production of the musical Shang-a-Lang due to the late unavailability of cast members.

Tickets for Friday’s show are £8 and are available from Tartan & Tweed, 12 Bank Street, Galashiels, or at the door.
