Specialist engineers have carried out a detailed inspection of a defect on the Forth Road Bridge, which has sparked lengthy delays for motorists.
The southbound carriageway of the bridge was closed on Tuesday evening as a safety precaution.
That led to significant disruption on the M90 and Kincardine Bridge on Wednesday morning.
Bridge operators Amey said it was possible the closure could continue until the evening rush hour.
Decisions on whether any further restrictions are required will be based on the results of the safety inspection. Engineers are now meeting to discuss the findings of that investigation.
A contraflow is currently operating on the northbound carriageway.

Structural faults mean that the bridge has been closed since midnight on December 3, with initial guidance saying it would be shut for at least 24 hours

Now transport minister Derek Mackay has said that it will take at least three weeks to repair the bridge, and safety was “paramount”.

Early on the morning of Friday, December 4, 11 mile tailbacks were reported approaching the Kincardine Bridge.

The southbound carriageway had been shut since the discovery of steelwork defects during inspections on Tuesday, December 1.

Since then, engineers have identified eight other parts of the bridge where similar problems could be encountered.

During the closure, emergency vehicles on blue-light calls will still be able to use the bridge.
