Teenager dies and pensioner injured in A68 smash

A teenager has died and a pensioner has been seriously injured in a crash in the Borders.

The two-car collision happened on the A68 south of the village of Newton St Boswells at around 8pm on Wednesday.

An 18-year-old woman driving a Hyundai Getz was taken to Borders General Hospital where she later died.

A 71-year-old woman behind the wheel of a Suzuki Ignis is in a serious condition at the hospital where her male passenger, 78, is being treated for non life threatening chest injuries.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Sergeant Neil Inglis said: “Tragically this collision has resulted in the death of a young woman and the driver of the other vehicle remains in a very serious condition in hospital.

“We are continuing with our investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision and would urge any motorists who were on the A68 at around 8pm on Wednesday to contact us immediately if they witnessed the incident.

“In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this inquiry should also get in touch.”
