'˜Suspicious' stables fire

Police are appealing for witnesses following a suspicious fire in the Hawick area.

The fire took hold sometime between midday and 1.40pm on Friday, May 6, at a stables in Burnflat Lane on the town’s southern edge.

There were two horses contained within the stable at the time of the blaze, although both were successfully rescued, unharmed.

In addition, two windows were deliberately smashed at a nearby building and a wall vandalised with pink spray paint.

Police are now carrying out inquiries into the matter and are appealing for the public’s assistance to help trace the person or persons responsible.

Sergeant Shirley Anderson, based at Selkirk police station said: “It’s quite clear from this early stage of inquiry that this fire was started deliberately and I’m today appealing to anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area to please contact us immediately.

“This could have been a far more serious incident however no animals or people were harmed.

“A significant amount of damage has been caused and we will work tirelessly to trace whoever is responsible.

“Anyone with information relevant to this incident or who was in the area around the time should contact police on 101. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
