Selkirk library’s community artwork is unveiled

The project has been completed as part of a partnership project with the Selkirk Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).

The artwork is the result of a series of free pewter casting workshops led by local artist Lara Greene.

Members of the local community were invited to create unique pewter pieces depicting scenes from the local legend of Tam Lin.

The final sculpture takes the form of a series of branches and will be displayed in the entrance stairwell at the library.

An event was held to give invited guests the opportunity to preview the sculpture and meet the artist herself.

Lara Greene said: “Over the summer, I worked with groups of children and adults with the aim of creating a visual retelling of an ancient story. We explored multiple versions of the Tam Lin legend which inspired unique and imaginative drawings.

“These drawings eventually became relief designs on pewter cast leaves which are grouped together on a metal branches.

“I hope this artwork will encourage people to find out more about Tam Lin as it is an exceptional tale of magic and transformation with a dramatic battle of wills between two strong female characters. It’s a story we should all know and celebrate, both locally here in Selkirk and throughout the wider Borders.”

Colin Gilmour, Selkirk CARS project officer, added: “Our project’s educational theme for 2015/16 is ‘Literary and Creative Selkirk’ which fits perfectly with the creation of this art installation.

“The workshops provided a unique opportunity for local people to learn about the process of pewter casting and contribute to the final artwork created by Lara. It is exciting to see the final piece in place in the library where I am sure it will be admired and appreciated by everyone who sees it.”

The sculpture is now on permanent display in the entrance to Selkirk Library.
