The local authority is seeking to replace former chief executive Tracey Logan, who retired at the end of September.

Whoever takes over will need to guide the council through what is certain to be one of the most challenging periods in its history, with the Covid-19 pandemic placing additional budgetary and other pressures upon it.

The job advertisement reveals that the post will attract a salary of between £128,405 to £131,156, with the blurb accompanying it saying: “We are looking for a new chief executive who can confidently lead the strategic direction, corporate planning and budgetry processes, to oversee and ensure delivery of our corporate service plans, objectives and values.”

The chief executive’s responsibilities are currently being shared by Rob Dickson, the council’s executive director, Corporate Improvement and Economy, and David Robertson, executive director, Finance and Regulatory.

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: “We are currently inviting applications for the post of chief executive, with a deadline of November 8. We would encourage anyone who is interested in the position, and believes they have the right attributes to lead Scottish Borders Council, to apply or get in touch for more information.”

Ms Logan, who was given extra powers to run the council during lockdown, had been in her £120,000 a year post since 2011, and was previously the council’s director of resources.

In her last few months in charge she had to deal with the impact of a major fire at Peebles High School, flooding across the region, a general election and finally the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said: “Being chief executive has been an enormous privilege and I will miss working with the outstanding and dedicated council staff we have in the Borders.

“The events of the last year, in particular, have presented us with some of the biggest challenges in my entire career and indeed the history of the council.

“These challenges have been significant and the staff across all departments and services have been incredible in their response.”

Applications are invited by submitting your full CV to Hayley Megson: [email protected].

It is hoped interviews can take place not long after the closing date for applications.
