Funding already received from Energise Galashiels has enabled the purchase of planters, which have already been placed in Channel Street and Douglas Bridge, in a bid to brighten up the route between the transport hub and the Great Tapestry of Scotland building.

Flower baskets have also been placed on the riverside fence next to Argos and the Italian restaurant and the other side of the river by the car park.

But they are looking for extra help from residents to plant more flowers in the previously award-winning gardens, which have been rather bare since Scottish Borders Council removed funding.

Community Council chairperson Judith Cleghorn said: “We are extremely thankful to Energise Galashiels and Milestone Garden Centre for the beautiful planters, they really do make a difference.

"However, we really want to get our Bank Street Gardens back to its best.

"We have launched our fundraiser, with a target of £8,000, and we've raised more than £600 already, so it is doable.

"We understand that this last year has been so dreadfully hard for everyone, but now we are coming out of the dark, we have the chance to do this.

"We are also looking for volunteers to help out with watering the planters for a few hours a month, although some of the businesses have already been helping out."

If you can help in any way, please call Judith on 01896 753296.
