Those limits, introduced after the region’s seven tips reopened at the start of June following the coronavirus lockdown, ceased to apply today, September 15.

People using trailers or large vans to carry rubbish must continue to book first at www.scotborders.gov.uk/recyclingcentres or by calling 0300 100 1800 before turning up at Hawick, Selkirk, Kelso, Peebles, Galashiels, Duns or Eyemouth’s tips, however.

Other temporary restrictions remain in place for the safety of the public and staff, such as only one person being allowed to leave a vehicle unless dumping heavy items and site staff not being able to help offload materials due to social-distancing guidance.

Tracey Logan, Scottish Borders Council’s chief executive, said: “It is vitally important that members of the public continue to social-distance while at our recycling centres. This is to ensure the safety of other site users and staff.

“Additional signage is being installed to remind the public of government guidance and importance of social distancing.”
