Councillor appointed as dementia champion

Councillor Elaine Thornton-Nicol was been appointed Scottish Borders Council’s dementia champion at last week’s virtual full council meeting.

Running alongside her other role as older people’s champion, the Selkirkshire SNP councillor hopes she will be able to raise awareness of the condition throughout the region.

She told us: “I’m really privileged tghat every one of my councillor colleagues stepped up to become dementia friends.

“Together, we have to make sure people understand what dementia is.

“We have to change how we speak about it and how we behave around people who are living with dementia, because the faster we destigmatise dementia, and people will be encouraged to get their diagnosis as early as they can.”

Also at the meeting, councillor Robin Tatler was appointed to replace Councillor Gordon Edgar as the substitute member on Scotland Excel Joint Committee.
