Police roll out road safety initiative

The joint policing operation, due to run for two weeks, began on Monday, September 21, with the overall aim of making roads safer, reducing road casualty numbers and positively influencing driver behaviour.

Road policing officers working in partnership with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) and the Camera Safety Partnership will carry out speed and safety checks across the region, focusing on those routes where the highest incidences of collisions are recorded.

Road Policing Inspector Richard Latto, said: “This local operation is part of our ongoing commitment to make Scotland’s roads network safer and positively impact upon those collisions which can have such lasting devastating consequences for loved ones.

“Additional police resources will be used to support this initiative.

“Our officers will work alongside partner agencies carrying out high visibility patrols, enforcement checks whilst taking every opportunity to engage with members of the public.

“Any driver found to wilfully disregard the law and compromise the safety of other road users, will be provided with the appropriate level of education, and in certain circumstances reported directly to the Procruator Fiscal.”

Walter Brown, area manager for the DVSA, said: “DVSA will be working with Police Scotland to target non-compliant vehicles and drivers.

“Road safety is our top priority and partnership working sends a clear message that robust action will be taken against those who flout the rules and risk the lives of other road users.”
