What can you do for the Romans?

Lovers of all things Roman are being invited to volunteer with the Trimontium Trust.

The group’s museum in Melrose reopened to the public last month in its new temporary home in Abbey House, while the main facility at the Ormiston Institute is renovated.

However, more volunteers are required to assist in the day-to-day running of the trust, given the recent popularity of the museum.

The trust’s heritage resources development officer Rob Longworth said: “Our volunteers are enjoying sharing their passion for history and their knowledge of the local area once again.

“The Trimontium Trust is now looking for new volunteers to help with museum operations on a daily basis and bring the story of Trimontium to life.

“We wish to increase the size of our volunteer cohort to match the increasing visitor numbers experienced since we opened post-Covid-19 lockdown.

Our volunteers welcome visitors, answer questions and run our retail space.

They can also get involved in lots of other aspects of the Trimontium Trust’s work across the community, such as archaeological digs, museum administration, cataloguing and documentation, schools outreach and walks.

“Whatever role they fulfil, our volunteers are ambassadors for Trimontium and actively help us promote the work and aims of the trust.

“Our current volunteers come from all walks of life and diverse experience.

“If you are based in the Borders, enjoy meeting new people, love history, or are looking for some experience in the heritage sector then we would love to hear from you.

“You don’t have to have an in-depth knowledge of the Roman era, just an enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

“You may even get a chance to dress up as a Roman at some point, or as a hillfort native, if you prefer.”
