Stationery chain assures it will remain a staple on the Borders high street

Bosses at UK stationery chain WH Smith have denied there are plans afoot to close the UK chain’s Galashiels Store.

Fears had been expressed that the Channel Street store, home to one of the town’s three Post Office counters, was earmarked for closure.

A WH Smith spokeswoman allayed those fears telling The Southern: “It’s purely a rumour. We have absolutely no plans to close our Galashiels store.”

The post office, moved into one half of the store around 12 year ago, is also staying put.

A Post Office spokeswoman added: “I have spoken to WH Smith and they would like to quash the rumours.

“WHSmith has just renewed its lease for the store, so WH Smith and Galashiels Post Office are not going anywhere.

“The rumour has probably stemmed from the fact that WH Smith has surrendered the lease for the flats above the store and there are now plans for those flats to be refurbished.”

WH Smith has one other store in the Borders in Kelso’s Horsemarket.

It’s more good news for Galashiels, following similar reassurances from Argos and Poundland last week.
