Mystery of the missing paintings

Selkirk councillor Gordon Edgar has put out a plea for any photographs taken inside the former Walter Scott’s courtroom within the town hall before it was refurbished, so he can evaluate where paintings on the walls are supposed to go.

He said some had been moved around, and, he said, it appeared that some may be missing.

He told the town’s community council last Monday: “All the paintings that were on the wall since it was redeveloped have changed, so if anyone has any pictures from within the hall, whether it be from an event such as the community council’s gift to the standard bearer, or on Common Riding Friday, I’d like to borrow them so we can see what painting went where.”

Chairman Alistair Pattullo said there should be plenty from the plays held there during Scott’s Selkirk weekends.

He added: “There is also a list of moveable assets, which should list the paintings.”

Mr Edgar said: “If someone has a list, that would be helpful, because I’m concerned that some paintings may have been taken away for some reason and replaced by other paintings and I’d like to find out what’s happened to them.”
