IN PICTURES: Melrose Sevens in recent years

The 137th annual Melrose Sevens should be taking place this weekend, but it was cancelled three weeks ago as restrictions on social gatherings came into play in a bid to slow the spread of Covid-19.

More than 12,000 spectators, many decked out in traditional fancy-dress efforts, enjoyed a mix of international and local rugby at last year’s tournament, and with the 2020 event expanded to a four-day festival including live music and extra tournaments, an even bigger turnout was expected this weekend.

That’s been shelved, though, so we’re settling instead for a look back through the Southern’s archives at some photos of the event, the biggest in the Borders, in years gone by.
