There are also plenty of activities for children to enjoy at Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre, near Jedburgh, including lots of family- oriented events, an indoor play area, varying exhibitions and long winding nature walks suitable for all the family.

For those with an interest in all things fishy, Philiphaugh Viewing Centre, near Selkirk, has plenty to keep youngsters interested, including video games, crawl spaces where you can pretend to be a salmon fry, the head of an extinct salmon to examine, life-size bean bag fish and loads of paintings, images and information.

A short walk from the centre brings you to the Cauld where you can see salmon battling the waters to reach their spawning ground. August to November are the best times of year to see mature salmon leaping right out of the water, but fish can be viewed underwater at any time of the year from the salmon centre cameras. You can watch live salmon via underwater cameras on the large plasma screen, or video extracts from throughout the year. It’s a great chance for curious kids to pick up beneath-the-waves insights.

There are also a number of nature walks and you can pick up the pamphlet for the self-guided battlefield walk at the cafe. Added to this, there is a brass rubbing nature trail, fully restored working waterwheel, and wildlife such as otters, red squirrel, deer, bats, owls, heron and foxes to find.
