The £612,000 worth of resurfacing works are set to begin on the night of Monday, November 9, when the road will be closed between Selkirk and Kingsknowes roundabout on the outskirts of Galashiels, from 8pm to 6am, with a diversion signposted via the A699, A68 and A6091. This diversion will add approximately 13 miles and 15 minutes to affected journeys.

The following night on November 10, the road will be closed between Selkirk and Hawick in the same time period, with a diversion signposted via the A698, A68 and A699, adding approximately 14 miles and 20 minutes to journeys.

The longest stretch of the road facing night-time delays will be between Hawick and Canonbie, which will take place in stages between November 11-13, 16-20 and 23, also between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion signposted via the B7201, B6357 and A6088. This diversion will add approximately 6 miles and 15 minutes to affected journeys.

Transport Scotland’s operating company Bear Scotland says these overnight works will see almost 4.15km of carriageway resurfaced at six locations, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans and share information about the project in advance.

Emergency services will be able to pass through at all times and local access for residents living within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government guidance, are in place to protect teams and ensure they remain safe on site.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Representative, said: “These overnight resurfacing projects will improve the condition of the road surface across six sections of the A7, benefitting road users for years to come.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience.

“We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

Later in the month, the A6091 near Melrose is also set to be closed at night-time, also for resurfacing works.

The £126,000 project will see the A6091 closed between Kingsknowes roundabout and Ravenswood roundabout from 9pm=6am on the nights of 24, 25 and 26 November.

A diversion route will be signposted via the A7, A699 and A68, adding approximately 11 miles and 18 minutes to affected journeys.
