City day-breakers splash out on fun at St Mary’s Loch

One criticism of the Borders Railway is that it seems to take many tourists out of the Borders into the capital, and not enough the other way around.

However, a new venture at St Mary's Loch could start to buck that trend.

Audrey Power’s Kayak and SUP hire and sales offers fun days on the loch on their kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, and it attracted three chaps from Edinburgh at the weekend.

She told us: “They came down on the train, took a taxi to St Mary’s Loch, played on the loch for a couple of hours and went home the same way. I think it’s fantastic to see. They thoroughly enjoyed it.”

One of the men, Jack Liddall, told The Southern they had heard about the new company on social media and thought it would be the perfect excuse to get out of the city for a few hours.

Jack said: “We absolutely loved it … it was so good to get out the city.

"It just makes such a nice change to the hustle and bustle of city life.
